The Stubbs Family of Hose and Long Clawson, Leicestershire

My great-great grandfather was Samuel Stubbs, who was born c.1820 in Wymeswold, Leicestershire.  He may have been the son of William Stubbs  born Normanton-on-Soar, (still alive, age 90, on the 1871 census for Hose) but I have yet to prove this.  He married Frances Mantle of Hose in 1844.  She was the daughter of Samuel Mantle, schoolteacher and founder of the Baptist church Sunday school at Hose.  In the 1851 Census for Long Clawson,  Samuel Stubbs is listed as aged 29, his occupation as Draper and licensed Hawker. He and Frances had five children,  Ann, Catherine, George, John and William (my great-grandfather).  Samuel died on 5th July 1862 aged 42 years.  On 22nd November 1874 William married Martha Elizabeth Matthews of Welby, Lincs at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Grantham, Lincs.  Martha was the daughter of Edward Matthews, harness maker of Welby and his wife Elizabeth daughter of John and Sarah Charity of Little Ponton, Lincs.  In 1881 William has become a farmer of 63 aces. William and Martha had 8 children Edith Emma, Catherine Annie, George Edward, Emily Agnes, Ellen Gertrude, Florence Mary,  Sarah Lizzie and Samuel William and Harold.  In 1891 William's occupation is Cordwainer/Carrier.  William died in 1893 aged 42 years.  In 1897 Martha was married again to a James Roberts and in 1901 is living in on North Streeet, Heanor, Derbyshire with James who is a coal hewer born Walsall, Staffs and her three youngest children Sarah, Samuel and Harold.  Sometime after this the family moved to Shirebrook, Derbys presumably for work, living in Strutts Yard and then Sherwood Drive from where my grandmother Florence Mary Stubbs was married on 21st May 1906 to Alexander Joseph Limb.   James and Martha Roberts were at the funeral of my great grandfather William Edward Limb in 1907 (see Limb page).  Martha died in 1915 and was buried at Shirebrook Cemetery on the 24th April of that year aged 61.
